The Five Precepts of Taekwondo:

Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, & Indomitable Spirit. All students of the art are expected to live by these basic guidelines.

Physical Benefits of Taekwondo:

Taekwondo is a form of oriental martial art composed of diverse offensive and defensive movements in which one’s hands and feet are used as weapons. It employs both graceful movements and powerful quick techniques at once. It is helpful for balanced physical development. The practice of Taekwondo has the effect of increasing muscular & springing power and improving the functions of the heart and lungs. All the movements of Taekwondo require simultaneous precision and speed. Rhythmic change between strength and restraint is also needed in the performance of its techniques.

Emotional benefits from the practice of Taekwondo:

The “Do” in “Taekwondo” means “the right way of doing something,” “the path of justice,” or “what is right.” The meaning of Taekwondo is roughly “the right way of fist and foot fighting.” Taekwondo, however, has some philosophical implications other than mere technique and fighting skills. The word “right” means “when and where to fight for what cause and purpose” as well as “how to fight.”

Sincere Taekwondo practitioners should always bear in mind that they must use their power and techniques for the great cause of resisting evil forces and defending the weak and the just. Reaching this state of righteousness and integrity will not be as difficult as it sounds if we develop a tremendous power somewhere inside our body. Maintaining equanimity of mind and remaining restrained in critical situations are other respectable characteristics of the Taekwondo student. Only those who posess inner strength can elect to avoid resorting to unnecessary violence, without a pain of conscience or disgrace of defeat. If you are a parent, give more thought about how much better it would be for our children to be educated in such a courageous atmosphere in their formative years!

In the course of Taekwondo practice, children are sure to find themselves more self confident, armed with strengthened will power and free of petty envy or cowardice. Straightforwardness against the strong and magnanimity to the weak is the sign of a genuine Taekwondo student. Finally, one can enhance or regain a sense of firm control on their lives. This is a direct result of the physical training and mental development that is undertaken during Taekwondo practice.

It goes without saying that every kind of sports activities plays a role in forming “a sound mind in a sound body.” Taekwondo especially sharpens the spirit of the martial person, an oriental version of western chivalry. The spirit of Taekwondo is a philosophical guide toward a happy and healthy life, both physically and mentally.
