our roots

Master Shim’s Black Belt Academy was founded on November 2nd, 1998 by Grand Master Kyu Jin Shim. Before coming to America, Master Shim served as a Korean Army martial arts expert.

When Master Shim opened the first Black Belt Academy (in Lexington Park) he put into effect his method of a modern approach to training with an emphasis on the values of traditional martial arts. This formula created the most successful Do Jang in the area.

The Black Belt Academy of Prince Frederick location opened in April of 2004. Master Kyle Webber, one of the first students at Master Shim’s BBA, took over as owner of BBA/PF in December of 2005 and has continued to expand the school following the model of his teacher.

Today Black Belt Academy of Prince Frederick has one of the largest student bodies in Southern Maryland. We teach Tae Kwon Do to all ages from 3 years and up. We have many children’s and educational programs including kick-boxing (Muay Thai) and women’s self-defense courses.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide students of all ages with the highest level of martial arts instruction combined with an emphasis on the values of traditional martial arts.
