our roots

Master Shim’s Black Belt Academy was founded on November 2, 1998, by Grand Master Kyu Jin Shim. Before coming to America, Master Shim served as a Korean Army martial arts expert.

When Master Shim opened the first Black Belt Academy in Lexington Park, MD, he put into effect his method of a modern approach to training with an emphasis on the values of traditional martial arts. This formula created the most successful dojang in the area.

The Black Belt Academy of Prince Frederick location opened in April 2004. Master Kyle Webber, one of the first students at Master Shim’s BBA, took over as owner of BBA/PF in December 2005 and has continued to expand the school following the model of his teacher.

Today Black Belt Academy of Prince Frederick has one of the largest student bodies in Southern Maryland. We teach Taekwondo to all ages, from 4 years and up. In addition, we have many children’s and educational programs, including an after school program, kick-boxing (Muay Thai), women’s self-defense courses, summer camp, and a ninja obstacle course, Family Nights, & more.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide students of all ages with the highest level of martial arts instruction, combined with an emphasis on the values of traditional martial arts.
